Lanesville Neighborhood Clean Up and Quarry Hike

May 7th at 11:00 a.m.

You are invited to join Lanesville residents on a spring walk to visit our beautiful local quarries and to help with a clean-up on Saturday, May 7th at 11:00 a.m.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to meet near the gates of the Plum Cove School.

We want city residents to view the beautiful location of Vernon’s Pit, and to share in the stewardship of this local treasure.  For cleaning the quarry entrance and hiking trails, the DPW is providing yellow and clear bags (recycling). Just bring gloves and wear comfortable hiking boots.

If you have questions, call Ward Councilor Val Gilman at 978-283-1993 or email her at or contact Lanesville resident Laurie Ure.

If it rains visit for status.

  • Les Bartlett, quarry workers and strikes
  • Lise Breen, slavery in Lanesville
  • Martin Ray, schooners on Ipswich Bay
  • Ronda Faloon, Cape Ann Museum archives and programs

Followed by an open discussion:

How shall we together go about preserving our Lanesville history?

On May Day, 1923, quarry workers celebrated the successful end of a year-long strike against the Rockport Granite Company proposal to end collective bargaining.    Source:   David Hayes
